In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, AR Rahman’s brother, actor Rahman, recounted a humorous anecdote that highlighted the music maestro’s unwavering dedication to his craft. He shared, “After Rahman got married, he took my sister-in-law on a honeymoon to a hill station. I called them late that night, around 12 or 1 a.m. She answered the call and mentioned she was already asleep. When I asked, ‘Where’s Rahman?’ she replied, ‘I don’t know.’ He was in another room, practicing his veena and working on a composition. That’s the kind of person he is—completely immersed in his music.”
On November 19, Saira Banu, AR Rahman’s estranged wife, announced their separation after 29 years of marriage. The official statement revealed, “This decision follows a prolonged period of emotional challenges in their relationship. Although there remains deep affection between them, the persistent strain and unresolved issues have created a divide too significant to overcome. Mrs. Saira expressed that her choice stems from profound pain and anguish.”
The Oscar-winning composer addressed the separation through a post on X, stating, “We had aspired to celebrate thirty years together, but it seems all things come with an unseen end. Even the divine throne might shake under the weight of broken hearts. In this breaking, we search for meaning, even if the fragments never align again. To our friends, we thank you for your compassion and ask for privacy as we navigate this delicate chapter (sic).”
Both Rahman, Saira, and their families have requested privacy during this time.
